It has been a very busy few months here at Arborealis, with recent updates to the website in line with WordPress’s new Full Site Editor method for designing, launching, and maintaining a website. At this date, we have completed about two-thirds of this task.
We might have made greater progress but have continued to publish on subjects of family and local history, too. During this period, the following recent updates have been posted as either new or significantly updated pages:
- Local history notes for the town of Claremorris and the parish of Kilcolman (Clanmorris) — including transcripts of several historical articles ranging from the mid-7th century to 1846. At least as many notes are pending on the editor’s “to do” list.
- Kennedy of Carland and Benburb, county Tyrone — a new sidebar showing a photograph of the Donaghmore high cross (© Alison Kilpatrick 2023), and a list of the men who followed their ancestor, the Rev. Thomas Kennedy of Carland (1625–1714), into clerical life.
- News transcripts for the parish of Kilrea in county London:Derry — completed through the year, 1800.
- Robert Gordon Kilpatrick (1851–1929) of Prescott, Canada West — This man’s life was very difficult. He was born the sole surviving son, into a family that fled the Irish famine in 1847. He led his wife and children on a merry chase across 19th century Canada before going to Toronto, but taking up several habitations there before finally settling in Berkeley street. Growing up, we knew that our great grandfather had spent a significant part (fifteen years, as it happens) of his life in what was then called the “insane asylum.” Why? is a question that will probably never find an answer, as any records detailing his diagnosis and treatment were destroyed. As his descendants, surely there must be intergenerational effects, but from what cause? we will never know. There were details that had not been input previously, illustrating just how frenetic the family’s to-ing and fro-ing must have been.
- Privacy statement — Although we are not required to fulfill the obligations of PIPEDA (Canada) or the GDPR (European Union), this statement has been revised to reflect the principles and practices embodied in those pieces of legislation.
- Remembrance of John Henry James (Jack) Dunford and his son, Kenneth, who were killed during the Blitz of London in September, 1940.
- Remembrance of the people who sacrificed their lives, including those who were confined as POWs, during WWI and WWII, in the sidebar of the Transcripts & extracts from military service records page.
- Scottish family history interests — a revised page, with a new sidebar providing historical extracts about various aspects of Scottish history.
- Terms and Conditions — a new page, detailing the contract between the owner of Arborealis and visitors to the site.
- Welsh family history interests — a revised page, with a beautiful historical map, and a new sidebar featuring historical extracts about Wales.
Best regards,
Alison Kilpatrick
