Lampard or Lamport of Steyning, Sussex :

Operating on the assumption that our paternal great grandfather was Samuel Lamport (1851–1920) of Piddinghoe in Sussex, I traced his ancestry to Henry Lampard (c.1680–1751) of Steyning and Ruth Paine (c.1680–1739), daughter of John Paine and Ruth Royse of Brighton, in Sussex. However, to date, DNA testing has nor borne out that assumption, leaving us to consider that Richard Townsend Causton (1846–1930) of London —or some other man altogether—was our great grandfather.

In any event, for whomever might benefit from this extensive research, the Lamport –with spelling variants at Lampard and Lampert– line consists of the following family and place names:

  • Andrews, Blunden, Chesmere, Furlonger of Coombes, Sussex
  • Bennett
  • Boyce of London
  • Card of Sevenoaks, Kent
  • Channell of Ewell, Surrey
  • Cook of Steyning in Sussex

  • Hockham of Brighton, Steyning, Thakeham, and Worthing in Sussex, and at Epsom and Ewell in the county of Surrey
  • Jeffrey of Kingston, Surrey
  • Knowles of Stanmer, Sussex
  • Lampard, Lampert, and Lamport in Brighton, East Preston, Fittleworth, Horsham, Lewes, Newhaven, Piddinghoe, Steyning, Thakeham, and Wivelsfield in Sussex, in London (Poplar), and at Carshalton and Wotton in the county of Surrey
  • Lillywhite of Washington, Sussex

  • Tellick of Penzance in Cornwall
  • Vennal of Cowfold in Sussex
  • Wellbelove of Adlsestone, Surrey

Causton of London :

Richard Townsend Causton (1846–1930) was the second husband of our great grandmother, Elizabeth Miles of Blackhouse in Keymer, Sussex. Theirs was an irregular marriage in two degrees: in the first instance, having cohabited from about 1895 in Croydon and Sanderstead in Surrey, and secondly, marrying in 1915 while Elizabeth’s first husband, Samuel Lamport, yet lived.

Related surnames in this line include:

  • Climmance, Dorcas, Knight, Law, Leadbetter, Leever, Newall, Potter, Staples, Stuart, Westgarth, and White, of places yet to be determined
  • Liddell of Preston and Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire
  • Micklen of Cookham, Berkshire
  • Rolfe of Marylebone, Middlesex
  • Trotter of Gloucestershire
