Research notes:

  • The earliest year of birth for a Burke/Bourke dying in the Claremorris Superintendent Registrar’s District, after the commencement of Civil Registrations (1864), was the year, 1773.
  • The Claremorris Registration District (RD) includes townlands from the civil parishes of Aghamore, Annagh, Bekan, Crossboyne, Kilcolman (Clanmorris), Knock, Mayo, and Tagheen. In 1861, this RD comprised 34,941 acres and numbered 9,821 people. In Ireland, the RDs share the same boundaries as the Poor Law Unions.3

Next steps:

  • As the Irish Department for Culture, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht posts more civil death records to Irish Genealogy, the death index entries listed above can be filled out with personal data which might assist in connecting the family dots, so to speak. As of the date of posting (2020-12-27), civil registrations of deaths had been uploaded from 1871 forward, leaving the records for 1864–1870 pending.
  • Study of the Catholic records for the parish of Kilcolman, which date from 1806 for marriages and 1835 for births (alas, burials were not recorded):—Transcripts of marriages for the period of 1806–1830 have been completed. As for baptisms, the gap of twenty-nine years between 1806 and 1835 amounts to a long generation. Excepting baptisms from 1835ff which can be linked to the later marriages recorded during the 1806–1835 period, this gap makes it difficult, if not impossible, to compile family units for the earliest marriages. While the primary parish of interest is Kilcolman—our John Burke (1795–1839) having declared his place of birth near Claremorris in that parish—the surrounding parishes might also have to be considered. Adjacent parishes include Crossboyne & Taugheen, Mayo Abbey, Balla, Killedan, Knock, Bekan, and Kilvine.
