Market, post office, and conveyances:

The following is an extract of the introductory section from Isaac Slater’s Directory of Ireland (1846) for the town of Claremorris in the parish of Kilcolman and county of Mayo:

Claremorris
Is a small market and post town, in the parish of Kilcoleman, in the barony of its name, and county of Mayo, about 140 miles W. of Dublin, 13 S.E. of Castlebar, and about 6 N.N.E. of Hollymount; situated on the road from Ballinrobe to Castlerea. It presents but few attractions to the stranger, the houses generally being but rudely built, and many even of those going to decay. In a neat court-house petty sessions are held every Thursday, a manor court every third month, and general sessions twice a year. The parish church of Kilcoleman [Church of Ireland] is a remarkably neat structure, with a beautiful towner and lofty spire. The living is a rectory, in the patronage of the Bishop of Tuam; there is also a Roman Catholic chapel. The charities consist of a dispensary lately established, and a parochial and national schools. The market is held on Wednesday, and fairs January 27th, March 11th, May 24th, June 22nd, Sept. 27th, and Nov. 23d. Population, in 1841, 2,256.

Post Office, John Collins, Post Master.—Letters from Dublin and all parts arrive (from Hollymount) every afternoon at half-past two, and are despatched thereto every morning at twenty minutes past ten.

Conveyances.—The nearest means of conveyance is at Hollymount, about ten miles distant.
