Poverty and the poorhouse

  • Darlow, Martha née Parker (1857-1885): After Caroline Parker née Wills died in 1836 at age thirty-one, Caroline's husband, Charles Parker, left the children chargeable to the parish. Martha and her siblings, Eliza Rebecca (1859-), Edward Alfred (1862-), Jane Maria (1864-1901), and John (1866-), wound up inmates of the London Road Union Workhouse in Daventry, Northamptonshire.
  • Wills, Martha née Wawman (1803-1871), of Everdon, Northamptonshire: After her husband James' death in 1847, Martha was enumerated as a pauper in the 1851 census. However, in 1859, Martha remarried, to Edward Isom (1816-1897), of Greathworth, Northamptonshire.
