Earliest references – analysis and timeline

The purpose of this analysis is to display the earliest references found for the Flavell surname in the northern counties of Ireland. The results of an extensive survey are shown as a timeline ranging from c.1715 to 1901, and the data are sorted by county, parish, and townland.

A second objective is to illustrate which townlands were still inhabited by Flavell individuals when the 1901 census was taken. Please note that this chart does not include all known or recorded events pertaining to these families. In addition, the families in any particular townland in 1901 did not necessarily descend from those who were identified as inhabitants during the 1700s and early 1800s.

The third objective—to identify the common ancestor(s)—was not met, though two interesting early 18th century individuals were found. Records reaching back another 100 years are needed to find this elusive person, but such records are notably absent in Irish research.

Limitations of this analysis include the fact that the data are incomplete: not all records survived (for example, parish records, tithes), and such surveys as were made were selective (for example, a survey of Protestant householders). Without a complete enumeration of the people living at a particular time, it is *very* unlikely that this timeline has identified all of the early to mid-1700s Flavells.
