African American Huggins in Woodford County, Kentucky

This section reflects attempts to trace persons and families of African American descent and who were either enslaved by the Huggins family of Woodford County or otherwise held the Huggins surname and lived in that county or had later connections to the city of Louisville. It is not known whether any of these individuals are related to James Huggins of Versailles.

Had Fanny been counted one of the females age 36–54, and Harriett in the under age 10 group, in the 1840 census enumeration of James Huggins’s house shown above? and were they freed by James Huggins when he lost his hemp farm and ropewalk operation and removed to Louisville c.1846?

☛ However, a later death registration provides a possible lead: Malissie Anderson of 104 7th Street, aged 52 years, daughter of Wyatt Huggins and Elsie Luckett, died in Henderson, Kentucky, 14th June 1915. The informant of the death was Helen Anderson, of same address.
[7] This event was followed by the tragic death of Helen Anderson herself not two months later, from traumatic injuries sustained in an automobile accident, 6th August 1915. Her parents were registered as Dud. Anderson and Malissa Huggins (places of birth not known), and the informant of the death was Bishop Anderson of Henderson.
